Shipping tips
Flat Rack Cargo Shipping Tips
Here are some helpful shipping tips that we put together for first-time exporters shipping through Los Angeles and Long Beach ports.
PierPass
All containers that discharge at L.A. or Long Beach ports incur a fee called PierPass. You can clear this on your own or your forwarder can, usually for an additional fee. The fee for 20′ containers is $ 37.71 and $ 75.42 for 40′ containers. Check your incoterms to determine who’s responsible for this fee.
Weight Restrictions
Lashing and Loading
Out-of-gauge cargo must be securely lashed to prevent it from shifting during transit and must follow NCB guidelines. This includes evaluating the blocking, bracing, and bedding for cargo securing and weight distribution.
Out-of-Gauge
The dimensions of the cargo exceed the flat rack or open top container by length, width or height, but can still be unitized in containers.
In-Gauge
The dimensions of your cargo are smaller than or equal to those of the flat rack or open top container (i.e. it requires special equipment but does not displace additional slots on the vessel).
Terminal Handling
Flat rack containers require special handling at terminals due to their unique design. Terminals charge “flip” fees for loading and unloading flat racks. Some terminals only handle flat racks on certain days. Plan accordingly to avoid delays.
