Exporting motor homes from the U.S. can be done via two shipping methods. RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) or via flatrack containers.
Choosing RoRo or Flatrack Container Shipping
RoRo offers cheaper shipping costs for cargo that is self-propelled and drivable. They are driven into the vessel and stored below deck, offering protection from the elements. Flatrack containers require extra handling, such as blocking and bracing, and drayage, to secure the cargo to the container for export shipping. It’s generally more expensive to ship using flatrack containers because there are more steps involved to get your cargo ready for export.
The Downside to RoRo Shipping
RoRo shipping schedules aren’t as frequent as those for container shipping. Certain destinations are only available from certain ports. For example, RoRo shipping options from Los Angeles and Long Beach are limited to destinations in Asia. If your exporting your motor home to Latin America or Europe, you’ll have to send it to Texas to ship RoRo, which will add to your total shipping cost.
Why Ship using Flatrack Containers
Flatrack shipping lets you ship to more destinations more frequently. You aren’t limited to certain ports to reach your destination. Two motor homes can also fit on one flatrack, depending on their size, saving you money.
