Ocean Freight
Before your container arrives at your door, it must travel thousands of miles over the world's oceans. At Comex Logistics LLC, we partner with the top container steamship lines to transport your containers safely and reliably to their destination.
How Does Ocean Transportation Work?
Before containerization, cargo was shipped in loose break-bulk fashion. Cargo was unloaded at port terminals manually by dock workers (known as longshoremen on the West Coast) in a process referred to as stevedoring.
When you import or export a container, a drayage provider delivers the container to a terminal within the port that offers stevedoring services. A container crane then lifts it onto a container shipping vessel operated by a steamship line that transports your container to its port of destination.

How Do I Pick a Steamship Line?
As a freight forwarder, we follow the below guidelines when it comes to selecting which steamship line to transport your containers form port of export to port of destination.
Step 1
Ports Serviced
The best case scenario is to select a steamship line that services both the port of export and the port of destination. The closer you are to a major port the more steamship line options you will have. Smaller ports have less transportation options to select from, and in most cases the rates will be higher.
Step 2
Routing
Depending on the port of export and port of destination, some steamship lines will offer direct routes and some will offer transshipment routes (container gets transported from one port to another, and from vessel to vessel). For example, lets say you're an importer located in California and are importing a container from Paraguay in South America. This container will be transported via the transshipment method due to no direct route options. Your container will most likely stop at ports in Brazil, Colombia, and finally the United States.
Step 3
Frequency of Service
The amount of sailings offered from port-to-port puts some steamship lines above others. Large steamship lines are able to offer weekly sailings depending on the port, while smaller lines can sailing offerings can vary in length. This is important because it gives you flexibility incase the original booking sailing was missed, or the container was rolled onto another vessel.
